Bio

Jessica Cheng is a Hong Kong writer and artist based in Toronto. With a background in Journalism and Comparative Literature, she is deeply interested in exploring diverse forms of storytelling as a way to uncover personal and collective narratives. Her writing has been recognized with several awards, including First Place in the Hong Kong Literature House Novel Writing Competition and the Intervarsity Creative Writing Competition Award.

Her creative practice spans across writing, zine-making, curation, and stage adaptation. In 2025, she collaborated with the Richard Charles Lee Canada–Hong Kong Library to curate Her Suitcase: A Voyage of Women Immigrants Exhibition. She has also published Two Nests – Love from Both, Amoments, and It Only Took a Suitcase.
Two Nests, which shares the stories of divorced families, was later adapted into a stage play and performed at the HKSC Arts & Culture Centre, bringing community voices into the theatre.

Statement

Through interviews, zine creation, and non-fiction writing, I explore how narratives shape our understanding of personal and collective histories. My practice is grounded in archival and collections research, alongside community dialogue, to surface overlooked stories and bring forward voices that are too often unheard.

My artistic direction is defined by a research-driven and site-specific curatorial approach, where each project grows out of the histories, spaces, and communities it engages with. I am particularly interested in how different mediums can extend the impact of a story: a zine that circulates personal reflections, an exhibition that transforms narratives into immersive encounters, or a stage adaptation that amplifies voices through collective performance. Each form becomes a way of deepening connections and inviting audiences to participate in the act of storytelling.

At the core of my work is a commitment to community engagement. By collaborating directly with individuals and groups, I create spaces where stories can be exchanged and transformed. These projects aim not only to reflect lived experiences, but also to spark dialogue, foster empathy, and build connections across differences.
