The Vanishing Landscape

To mark its tenth anniversary, the Lung Fu Shan Environmental Education Centre reimagined how stories of nature could be told. In the past, the Centre had collaborated primarily with scholars and ecological experts from the University of Hong Kong, who guided the public through the mountain’s diverse flora and fauna. On this occasion, however, a different perspective was invited: writers and artists were asked to interpret Lung Fu Shan anew, using the Mid-Levels as a threshold from which to reflect on the relationship between the mountain and the city below.

Within this initiative, Cheng was commissioned to create a short story inspired by the site’s layered connections between nature and urban life. The work was later transformed into an integral element of the exhibition Sensing Nature: This is Lung Fu Shan, offering visitors a literary lens through which the mountain’s shifting histories and identities could be encountered.
